Andrew Dehart (of Morgan County)’s journey from unemployment to a fulfilling career as a lineman with Bird Construction is a powerful example of resilience and success. With the invaluable support of EKCEP’s Kentucky Career Center and particularly the dedicated guidance of Career Advisor Rebecca Gilliam at Gateway Community Action Agency, Dehart navigated the path to his new profession.
Dehart’s road to the Kentucky Career Center began, as it often does, through a personal connection. “A friend told me about it,” he shared, highlighting the power of word-of-mouth in reaching those in need. His motivation was clear and focused: “I wanted to find a career as a Lineman, so I stopped in and saw Rebecca Gilliam.”

Rebecca Gilliam and the team at the Career Center proved to be the catalyst Dehart needed. “They provided me with the training and assisted me with what I needed to complete the training,” he explained. The support went beyond just the educational aspect, addressing critical financial and practical barriers. Dehart specifically benefited from gas cards, work apparel, and climbing gear, essential items for someone embarking on a physically demanding and specialized trade.
One of the most significant hurdles Dehart faced was the financial burden of specialized training. “The biggest challenge I faced was being able to afford the training,” he admitted. “The career center helped me pay for the tuition. Also they helped with travel to stay in class.” This comprehensive support was instrumental in allowing him to focus on his studies without the added stress of financial strain.
The efficiency of the Kentucky Career Center’s assistance is evident in Dehart’s swift transition to employment. “I obtained employment with Bird Construction the day I completed lineman training,” he proudly stated, confirming his official start date as May 12, 2025. This immediate placement underscores the center’s effectiveness in connecting trained individuals with waiting employers.
When asked if he would recommend the Kentucky Career Center to others, Dehart’s answer was “Yes.” His advice to those hesitant to reach out is simple and powerful: “I would advise anyone who is looking to find a better career to contact the Career Advisors at Gateway Community Action. They are very professional and willing to help.”
For Dehart, the experience has been nothing short of transformative. “It has helped me meet one of my goals, which was to become a lineman,” he reflected. “I wanted a career that paid well and that allowed me to work outside.” Before connecting with the Kentucky Career Center, Dehart was unemployed. The transition, facilitated by the center, was seamless and life-altering. “I went from being unemployed to having a career that will allow me to have a life.”
Today, Andrew Dehart is proudly working as a Lineman for Bird Construction, a testament to his determination and the invaluable support of the Kentucky Career Center and their supportive services. His story serves as a powerful reminder of the vital role these organizations play in empowering individuals to achieve their career aspirations and build a better future.
