BOC Logging, a locally owned company dedicated to sustainable forestry and workforce development, is celebrating a major milestone achieved in partnership with the Harlan Kentucky Career Center and EKCEP. Through this collaboration, the company has successfully transitioned two individuals from a work-based learning experience into full-time employees, strengthening both their team and the local economy.
Owner Benjy Coleman has long believed in giving individuals hands-on opportunities to grow. With support from career advisors Beth Edwards and Flora Wattenberger, BOC Logging initially provided work experience placements for seven individuals, giving them valuable exposure to the logging industry. This initial success led to the formalization of an On-the-Job Training (OJT) program designed to hire and train new talent.
“Our partnership with BOC Logging is a powerful demonstration of how we can connect local businesses with motivated talent,” said Flora Wattenberger, Career Advisor. “Benjy’s commitment to investing in the community is what makes this a true success. We are proud to have helped facilitate an opportunity that not only provides essential skills but also leads directly to long-term employment.”
Beth Edwards, who also supported the initiative, added, “This collaboration has created a clear pathway for these individuals to gain hands-on experience and build confidence. It’s a win-win: BOC Logging gets to cultivate a skilled workforce, and our clients are able to secure stable, rewarding careers right here in their community.”
As a result of this collaborative effort, BOC Logging has officially hired:
- Ben Coleman as an Equipment Operator
- Jonathan Blevins as an Ariost (Tree Cutter)
These new hires are gaining structured, paid training while contributing to the company’s daily operations.
The partnership between BOC Logging and the Harlan County Community Action’s Kentucky Career Center is a shining example of how local businesses can cultivate skilled workers, grow their operations, and strengthen the community through dedicated workforce development initiatives.
