Jamie Rawlins, a dedicated mother and newly licensed practical nurse (LPN), has advanced her career with support from the Gateway Kentucky Career Center and the Eastern Kentucky Concentrated Employment Program, Inc. (EKCEP). After connecting with Career Advisor Marie Wells of Gateway Community Action Agency, Rawlins successfully completed her nursing education, transitioned into a full-time role, and increased her earning potential.
Rawlins first learned about the Kentucky Career Center through a friend. Motivated by her children and her desire to build a more stable future, she reached out in October 2024 to explore education and employment options. At the time, she was working part-time as a Medication Aide at Ridgeway Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and hoped to move into a more advanced healthcare role.
“I called and made an appointment because I knew I needed help to move forward,” she said. “My children were my biggest motivation. I wanted to show them what was possible.”
Balancing work, parenthood, and nursing school brought financial and logistical challenges, especially the costs tied to completing her LPN training. Travel to classes and clinicals also strained her limited budget.
Career Advisor Marie Wells provided Rawlins with steady guidance and vital support throughout her training journey. Through EKCEP programs, Rawlins received financial assistance for both tuition-related needs and travel, removing two of the biggest obstacles to completing nursing school.
“Marie was always helpful in assisting me with travel to class and helping me meet my goals,” Rawlins said. “Having the money to complete my education made all the difference.”
Upon completing her program, Rawlins transitioned smoothly into a full-time LPN position at Ridgeway Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. The employer welcomed her advancement, recognizing the value of investing in staff who continue their education. Jamie’s story is an inspiring example of how career advising and financial support, coupled with employer commitment, create a lasting positive impact on the lives of Eastern Kentuckians.
