Justin Watson knew a commercial driver’s license could open the door to steadier work, but the cost of training and the challenge of getting there each week stood in his way.
The Kentucky Career Center in West Liberty helped him overcome both barriers. Within two weeks of earning his Class B Commercial Driver’s License, the West Liberty resident was working in a commercial truck driving position.
Watson completed his training with tuition and transportation assistance provided through the Kentucky Career Center. The center is operated locally by Gateway Community Action Agency in partnership with the Eastern Kentucky Concentrated Employment Program, Inc. (EKCEP).
Before connecting with the career center, Watson’s employment opportunities were limited because he lacked the credentials required to operate commercial trucks. His determination to secure stable employment grew after his family experienced an emergency during a period when he was not working.
Earning his Class B CDL gave Watson the qualification he needed to pursue commercial driving work and provide greater financial stability for his family.
Watson said other Eastern Kentuckians facing employment or training barriers should not hesitate to seek assistance from their local Kentucky Career Center.
“I would definitely recommend the career center to others,” he said. “Don’t be afraid to reach out for help. Set your pride and ego aside and see what they can do for you. At some point, we all need help.”
